i dont want one thats like a blanket to put over the water that you have to put away f you wanna swim. thats too much. im trying to convince my parents that a solar heater is so much easier than spending money every day on heating the water. my dad says he doesnt have time to install it. is it really that hard?

commercially made systems are not that hard to install but they can be pricey. I have rigged two pools with a homemade set up that worked well considering the cost. The first was lucky enough to have a hose bib just after the pump. I took 300 feet of black garden hose and wove it in coils on skids behind a shed, later the pool owner draped it over the shingle roof of the shed. He said it worked well enough but it worked 10 Xs better on the roof. At the second I glued coils of black cpvc tube to plywood using black roof sealant and angled it south against a fence. I made a connection just after the filter with a TEE and a valve. It had some problems at the peak of summer when it wasn’t needed and no water was diverted through it and parts melted. Both worked ok and were fairly inexpensive and fool proof but they were rigged, amateurish, and less aesthetic. But they were fun to experiment with.

  1. They are not very hard to install, companies have made them very self explanatory, and with the exception of the length of piping to the roof {which is fairly in expensive} everything is included; there are extras that can be purchased, but the basics are included.

The one thing that must be checked first is to see if there are any CCR’s {Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions} (if applicable) that would prevent you from putting this system on your roof.
